Lead and manage public engagement and outreach events for NASA’s James Webb and Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescopes, infrared observatories that complement and extend the discoveries of the Hubble Space Telescope. Duties include managing staffers/volunteers, organizing logistics, and executing events for Webb and Roman at locations around the country, with audiences ranging from 100-100,000 people. In 2024, planned and managed 17 separate events across the United States, with a combined budget of over $100,000. Track and report all event attendance metrics data, refining future events plan based on data to attend the most impactful events.
Generate creative and unique content to best connect and promote Webb and Roman publicly through engaging articles, informational products (posters, banners, brochures), social media posts, or collaboration ideas with media and pop culture figures. Write and publish feature stories highlighting Webb and Roman engineering, science, and events all while integrating into a larger strategic communications plan, incorporating Associated Press style, and working under deadlines.
Support the completion of Webb and Roman media requests by interfacing with subject matter experts to fulfill requests from national and international media outlets (CBS, CNN, Newsweek, BBC, etc.). Schedule and coordinate media access, answer media questions through start to finish of interviews, and prepare experts for interviews with cohesive, overarching talking points, strategies, and responses to queries.
Creation and execution of the Webb Community Events initiative, sharing Webb content, training, and materials to enable locations around the country to host their own Webb-themed events. Empowered over 700 libraries, schools, museums, and community centers in all 50 states to host Webb events surrounding the Webb launch in December 2021 and the Webb first science images release in July 2022.
